## How the Barcode Generator works

 

Pick a symbology (Code 128, EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC or Code 39), type your value, and the tool renders a scannable barcode in your browser using standard encoding. You can set bar width and choose whether the human-readable number prints below the bars, then download the result as a PNG to print on labels. EAN-13 needs exactly 13 digits, EAN-8 needs 8, and UPC needs 12; Code 128 and Code 39 accept letters and numbers for internal SKUs.

A Surat garment shop assigns internal SKU 'KURTA-M-BLU-01' to a medium blue kurta, selects Code 128, generates the barcode, downloads the PNG, and prints it on a sticker so the billing counter can scan it instead of typing the code.

 

## Frequently asked questions

  Which barcode type should I use for my shop?

Use Code 128 for your own internal SKUs (it supports letters and numbers), and EAN-13 only if the product carries an official GS1 barcode number, such as FMCG items you buy from distributors.

 Can I use these barcodes to sell on Amazon or Flipkart?

Marketplaces require globally unique GS1/EAN barcodes for most catalog listings, which you must buy from GS1 India; a self-generated Code 128 works for in-store billing and internal stock, not for marketplace product identity (though FNSKU labels for FBA are a separate courier/fulfillment code).

 Do I need a special barcode printer?

No. You can download the PNG and print it on any laser or inkjet printer using A4 label sticker sheets, though a dedicated thermal label printer is faster and cheaper on ink for high volumes.

 Why does EAN-13 show an error?

EAN-13 must be exactly 13 digits with a valid check digit. If you enter letters or the wrong length it will fail, so switch to Code 128 for alphanumeric internal codes.
