Once a retailer opens a second or third store, the billing app that ran the first shop starts to crack. Stock counts drift between branches, transfers live on WhatsApp, each store has its own customer list, and the online store and marketplace listings oversell items that sold out at the counter an hour ago. Choosing multi-store retail software is really choosing how your chain will run for the next five years, so it is worth comparing the options on the things that actually break at 2, 10 and 50 stores, not on feature lists.
This guide covers what to evaluate, then walks through the main options Indian retail chains shortlist today: what each is built for, where it fits best, and where it falls short for a multi-store chain.
What Should Multi-Store Retail Software Do That a Billing App Cannot?
A single-store billing app answers one question: what did this counter sell today? Multi-store software has to answer chain-level questions in real time. The capabilities that matter most are:
- One live inventory across every branch and warehouse. Not a nightly sync, a single stock ledger every store, the website and the marketplaces read from, so you can sell what exists anywhere and stop overselling.
- Stock transfers between locations with the right GST paperwork: a delivery challan within the same GSTIN, a tax invoice between different GSTINs. Our free delivery challan generator shows how the rule works.
- Multiple GSTINs if you operate in more than one state, with per-branch billing and returns.
- Offline billing that keeps the counter running through internet outages and syncs afterwards.
- Branch-level roles and reporting, so store managers see their store and head office sees the chain.
- One customer and loyalty record across stores and online, so a customer who earned points in one branch can redeem them in another.
- Online store and marketplace sync if you sell on your own website, Amazon or Flipkart, ideally on the same stock ledger as the stores.
If you are still deciding whether you need this at all, our guide on setting up multi-store stock transfers is a good test: if those steps are painful today, you have outgrown your current setup.
Which Multi-Store Retail Software Options Do Indian Chains Shortlist?
The options below come up most often in Indian retail evaluations. They are built for different jobs, so the right choice depends on your category, your channels and how many stores you plan to run. We make one of them, so we have kept each description to what each product is positioned for, and linked our detailed side-by-side comparisons where we have them.
Commmerce
Commmerce is a retail operating system built for Indian chains with roughly 2 to 50 stores. POS billing, inventory, the online store, order management, warehouse, delivery and Amazon/Flipkart sync run on one real-time core, so every channel reads and writes the same stock. The POS keeps billing for up to five days without internet and runs on Android, iOS, macOS, Windows, Linux and the web from one app, without proprietary hardware. It supports multiple GSTINs, branch-level roles and stock transfers between outlets.
Best fit: multi-store retailers who want stores, website and marketplaces on one system. Consider others if: you need built-in full accounting, ONDC integration, or a fashion ERP with production planning.
Ginesys One
Ginesys is a cloud retail ERP built primarily for fashion and apparel, covering ERP, POS, OMS, inventory and loyalty, with POS and the Browntape OMS sold as separate products. It is an established choice for apparel retailers with production needs and fashion-specific ERP requirements. See our Commmerce vs Ginesys comparison.
Best fit: fashion and apparel businesses that need a fashion ERP. Watch for: separate products to run together if you want POS, ecommerce and marketplace as one system.
GOFRUGAL
GOFRUGAL is a long-established Indian retail ERP with local implementation partners, built-in accounting and ONDC marketplace integration, delivered as separate modules for POS, ecommerce and marketplace. See our Commmerce vs GOFRUGAL comparison.
Best fit: retailers who want built-in accounting, local implementation support or ONDC. Watch for: modules that are not one shared platform.
Zoho POS
Zoho POS is a cloud point of sale inside the Zoho ecosystem, with a clean interface and integration with Zoho Books, CRM and Inventory. It is cloud-first rather than built for days of offline billing, and less focused on India-specific retail workflows such as warehouse operations and multi-branch stock at the counter. See our Commmerce vs Zoho POS comparison.
Best fit: retailers already standardised on Zoho.
Vyapar
Vyapar is a GST billing, accounting and inventory app for small Indian businesses, on mobile and desktop with offline-first operation, e-invoice and e-way bill generation, and GSTR reports. Its multi-store features are lightweight and reporting-oriented rather than real-time chain operations, and marketplace support is mainly sales-data import for accounting. Our guide to Vyapar alternatives covers when retailers move on, and our Commmerce vs Vyapar comparison goes deeper.
Best fit: single shops and small MSMEs that mainly need affordable GST billing and accounting.
Marg ERP
Marg is a long-established desktop GST billing, inventory and accounting system with deep pharma and FMCG distribution roots: batch and expiry tracking, MRP and scheme control, and full accounting. Its heritage is desktop software, ecommerce and marketplace connectivity are not core, and it is sold through a dealer network rather than self-serve sign-up. See our Commmerce vs Marg comparison.
Best fit: pharmacies, chemists and distributors who need deep batch, expiry and accounting features.
Unicommerce
Unicommerce is an ecommerce order and warehouse management platform for online and marketplace sellers, with mature marketplace integrations at scale. It is centred on online orders rather than an in-store billing counter. See our Commmerce vs Unicommerce comparison.
Best fit: pure online and marketplace sellers without physical stores.
Shopify POS
Shopify POS is the in-store extension of Shopify's ecommerce platform. It is a strong choice when ecommerce is the main channel and you sell across countries and currencies, with a basic offline mode at the counter. See our Commmerce vs Shopify POS comparison.
Best fit: ecommerce-first brands adding a few stores.
Petpooja (restaurants)
If your outlets are restaurants, cafes or cloud kitchens rather than retail stores, a restaurant POS such as Petpooja, built around KOT, recipe-based inventory and Swiggy/Zomato integration, is the right category. See our Commmerce vs Petpooja comparison.
How Do You Choose the Right One for Your Chain?
Start from how your business actually makes money, then test the shortlist on your own messiest scenarios rather than a demo script.
- Where do most sales happen? Mostly in stores points to a store-first system with offline billing. Mostly online points to an ecommerce or OMS platform.
- What is your category? Fashion with production, pharma with batch and expiry, and restaurants each have specialist tools. General retail chains usually want a unified platform.
- How many stores in three years? Pick for the chain you are building. Re-platforming at 15 stores is far harder than at 3.
- Do you sell in more than one state? Then test multi-GSTIN billing and inter-state stock transfers specifically.
- One system or several? Count how many products, logins and integrations it takes to cover stores, website and marketplaces. Every seam is a place where stock goes out of sync.
During demos, ask each vendor to show three things live: a stock transfer between two branches with different GSTINs, a sale at a counter with the internet switched off, and the same item selling out in a store and disappearing from the website and Amazon within seconds. The answers separate chain-ready systems from billing apps with a branch selector. Our guide to choosing a POS for an Indian retail store has a fuller checklist.
Is It Time to Switch?
You have outgrown your current setup if staff check stock by phoning other stores, transfers are tracked on paper or WhatsApp, the website oversells, or month-end means reconciling separate systems by hand. If that sounds familiar, schedule a demo and we will walk through those three tests on Commmerce with your own products and branches.
